Luke 24

S: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” 24:5

O: “But a reproof is given to those that look for Him among the dead, - that look for Him among the dead heroes that the Gentiles worshipped as if He were but like one of them, - that look for Him in an image, or a crucifix, the work of men’s hands, or among unwritten tradition and the inventions of men” – Matthew Henry

S: Jesus is alive and because of this I can have a relationship with Him.  I can spend time with Him, He hears me when I talk to Him, He is my comfort.

Luke 23

S: Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!”  And having said this He breathed His last.  23:46

“He was Himself both the priest and the sacrifice; our souls were forfeited, and His must go to redeem the forfeiture.” – Matthew Henry

Lord Jesus, thank You for being willing to suffer a most wicked and cruel death to pay the penalty for my sins.  Help me to keep the cross at the forefront of my mind as I live my daily life in its shadow.  Let me never take for granted, or take lightly, the price that You paid.

Luke 22

S: And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.” 22:20

O: The Old Covenant was based on the shedding of animal blood as offerings to God.  The New Covenant is based on the shedding of perfect blood.  For, “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Hebrews 9:22).

A: Let me never forget that it is only through the shed blood of Christ that I can approach the throne of God.

Luke 21

S: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” 21:33

O: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8

Not only has God existed before time, He doesn’t change.  What He said 2,000 years ago still stands today, and will stand for all eternity.

A: If God changed, then I could never be confident in my salvation because He could decide to change how to get to heaven.  And because He doesn’t change, I can’t dismiss His commands in the Bible just because our society doesn’t like them.  The key though, is to look at Scripture through the lens of the New Covenant, remember that, while the Law is profitable to us, we are no longer under it.

Luke 20

S: “Beware the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts” 20:46

O: The Pharisees acted righteous on the outside to impress men, but inside their hearts were far from God.

A: I find it interesting that God keeps drawing me back to verses like this.  I spent years ‘associating’ with people, and preachers, who were of the “man of God” mindset.  What they meant by that was that the preachers were somehow extra special with a greater link to God and any questioning of them was disrespectful to them and to God.  I really think that the Lord is using these verses to not only remember to keep myself humble, but also to watch the way that I view other people.

Luke 19

S: “For the Son of Man came to see and to save the lost.” 19:10

O: The Pharisees figured that when the Messiah came, He would come to them and reward them because they were such good and righteous people – at least in their own eyes.  But that’s not what Jesus did, or why He came.  He came to call sinners to repentance and salvation.

A: I am so glad that Jesus seeks and saves the lost, that I didn’t have to do anything to merit salvation.  If my salvation relied at all on me, I would still be lost.

Luke 17

S: “So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” 17:10

O: God doesn’t really need us.  He is complete without us and can accomplish His will without us.  We, however, are nothing without God.  Therefore, my service to God is profitable to me, but adds nothing to God.

A: When I serve with an attitude of “look at me, aren’t I wonderful,” my service is tainted.  When I serve God as He has called mi it is really only giving back to Him that which He deserves and a small portion at that.  I have life because of Him, therefore my life I should give back, not because I have any merit or specialness, but because I owe Him everything.

Luke 16

S: And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.  For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” 16:15

O: The Pharisees were all about putting on a good show.  They prayed often, and publically, you always knew when they were fasting, everything was done for all to see.  In all of that, though, their hearts were turned from God, so all that they did was in vain.

A: Yes, God wants my obedience, but more importantly, He wants my heart.  If all I do is go through the motions, I will be found wanting before the Lord.  The Lord tells us that He, “sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart,” (1 Samuel 16:7).  When my heart is right before God, the rest will follow.
