S: 3:5 So also the tongue is a small member yet it boasts of great exploits.
3:10 From the same mouth come blessing and curing.  My brothers and sisters this out not to be so.

O: This small part of us has such a big impact. I need to take James 1 and 2 to heart and make it part of my inner most self and thus my faith, Not just hearers of the word but doers. Love your neighbor as yourself. Bring faith to completeness with works. The tongue becomes a VERY important part of all of these.  If I study the word, but then go out and am partial to the people around me, I am not not following the faithful.  I don't think anyone is perfect.  But this is a good reminder to think before speaking.

A: This one is hard.  Listen more and keep the tongue in check.  Ask for guidance and wisdom before speaking. No one is perfect. This will be a lifetime of learning.

K: Lord, please guide me to use my tongue for blessing and not curses. Thank you for the words of James to help me remember that the small tongue can set huge fires. Help me to remember to listen more and be intentional when I speak.  Amen.

S:22 You see that faith was active along with his works and faith was brought to completion by the works.
24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

O  Reading the word is good.  But taking it to heart and acting on God's plan for me as an individual is a walk in faith.  Striving to be impartial, means smiling or greeting the best dressed as well as the least dressed and acting on the word.  2:8 not just hearing the word but doing the word.

I think in order to truly have faith there must be an active part. To follow the example of Jesus means some application of the word. God's call maybe a very small thing - holding a door or saying thank you.  I think we need to act on the words if we are truly walking in faith.  Which is what SOAK is really good.  Makes you think about how to apply what you read.  Prepares you ahead of time for a situation.

K Please Lord, fill my work with my faith and my faith with works.  Help me to follow the example of Jesus.  To be faithful like Abraham.  To spread a little faith and love in our broken world.  Amen.

S: 2:8-9

O: From the Wesley study bible: Favoritism is incompatible with faithfulness.
It is just that simple.

A: Ok, so this is Sin.  Favoritism.  Sin.  Oh boy.  I do this without even thinking I am doing it.  Some people are easier to like than others.  Some people you want to sit next too.  Some people you feel special because they way to be friends with you.  But it is Sin.  So first step - acknowledge it - I do this - Next step to know that we are all beloved in God's eyes.

K: Dear God, Please walk with me and let me see everyone as beloved children of God - no one less, no one more.  Please let me extend the same hand to those who are in fine clothes and for those who are in poor clothes. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Ladies - I am really enjoying everyone's SOAKs.  Thank you so much for sharing.

S: James 2 v12 So whenever you speak, or whatever you do, remeber that you will be judged by the law of love, the law that set you free.

O: I have been set free and all my sin forgiven because of what jesus did for me on the cross, his law of love has given me acess to god amazing grace. To be able to treat everyone the same I need to remember. this at all times and try to see them as jesus does, when he set them free, or how he longs too. humility seems to be the key, I must stay humble and close to God with a thankful heart for what he has done for me.

A: easier said than done! Developing an attitude of gratitude and a humble heart is a daily battle and a lifes work, but every morning I am renewed and try again. I have a book of thanks to record gods goodness to me and try to put myself in anothers place before making assumptions.

Oh yes.  Thank you for your words.

S: James 1:3-4 and 12 the word endurance.

O: I believe trials are God's way to reaching out to us but in the middle of them, I panic.  It takes me a bit to talk to God and realize this is joyful because he is with me and reaching out to me.  Asking me to stretch my faith muscles.

A: I fear and doubt I have the endurance but I find that my walk with God I must look for one step instead of focusing on too far down the road.  Apply this to today and the next step are what I need to do and listen at every step.  I know he is with me and holding my hand.  I want to build up endurance so I might receive the crown.

K: Father I reach out to hold your hand.  Please remind me of the joy of trials so that I might open my mind and heart to what you are telling me.  I pray for endurance to walk with you and your will.  Amen.

Hi there.  My name is Rebecca.  I am a wife and mother of 2 (9 yo boy, 13 yo girl).  I am in a small group at church and we are on summer break.  We have been studying discipleship and books on living a Christ centered life.  Which is all good but I really wanted to get into studying the Bible on a regular basis.  I really enjoy when there is an exchange.  I learn things that I might not have thought about.  I am hoping to have some exchange here.  I have never done an online study group before.  Looking forward to studying with this group.
